“Regardless of the color of your medal, or how you performed in your sport, all of you are already winners for having competed in the Paralympics as members of the national team,” said Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn at a luncheon on Sept. 29. The prime minister was congratulating all the athletes who competed at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.
“With the sheer strength of will power, the national team showed us that challenges great and small can be overcome with tenacity and hard work,” said the prime minister. “All those watching the games learned, through your dedication and courage, that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I have no doubt that all the athletes here will take the experience of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games to pursue even greater dreams in the future.”
Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Cho Yoonsun attended the event and took time to shake hands and converse with each of the athletes. She expressed her gratitude to the national team for showing the world that there were no limits to achieving your goals.
The 139 athletes representing Korea won seven golds, 11 silvers and 17 bronzes, for a total of 35 medals. Swimmer Cho Gi Seong claimed three gold medals, and set a world record in the backstroke, while the boccia team won its eighth consecutive gold medal at this year’s games.
The athletes enjoyed a performance by singers Huh Gak and Younha at the event. Huh Gak came down from the stage to greet the athletes during his second song, and the athletes burst into laughter as they posed for selfies with the famous singer.
