Department stores and street stalls in Sogong-dong in central Seoul are crowded with shoppers, while placards and banners announce the launch of the Korea Sale Festa, on Oct. 1 in Seoul.

A country-wide series of shopping sales, tourism discounts and pop concerts, collectively known as the Korea Sale Festa, has finally begun.

Performances and street art will be held at five famous neighborhoods across the country, including Garosu-gil and Itaewon in Seoul, until Oct. 9. A variety of other shows and events will follow, too.

From Sept. 29 to Oct. 9, at the beginning of the festival, visitors can enjoy huge discounts at department stores, supermarkets, online shopping sites and traditional wet markets. From Oct. 4 to Oct. 7, online shopping malls will provide “Cyber Hot Days” with certain discounts on certain days. A total of 27 online shopping sites are participating in the national program, and will provide discounts each day on things like clothes, electronics, cosmetics or household items, up to 70 percent off.

The government has designated a total of 17 traditional wet markets as special markets, representing specific local governments across the country, in order to draw more shoppers and to seek a balanced development and distribution of industries. About 400 traditional markets join the festival this year, and will provide their wares at affordable prices, with discounts between 10 and 80 percent.

There will be many discounts available to non-Korean tourists visiting the country, helping them to buy more flights, accommodations, shopping items and entertainment tickets during their time in Korea.

More details about the Korea Sale Festa are available at its official website.
