Major works by Peter Rubens (1577-1640) that are currently part of the Liechtenstein Princely Collections will soon be on display at the National Museum of Korea.

Entitled “Rubens and Other Masters,” the exhibit will showcase paintings by the Flemish Baroque masters: Peter Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Pieter Brueghel de Oude, among others. The exhibit opens on Dec. 12 and runs until April next year.

The portrait of Rubens’ daughter, Clara Serena, is one of the works that will be on display at the National Museum of Korea from Dec. 12 until April next year.

Audiences will have a chance to view some of Rubens’ masterpieces, including “Portrait of Clara Serena Rubens” and “The Discovery of the Infant Erichthonius,” as well as a range of his oil sketches and his tapestry series, the “History of the Consul Decius Mus”.

The exhibit will explore Rubens’ versatility as an artist and as a man. Rubens was first and foremost a painter, but he was also a diplomat, humanist scholar, art collector and educator throughout his career. As such, the exhibit will seek to define the purpose of the art created by this man of many facets, and explore the significance of his images in the historical context of 17th century Europe.

Rubens’ masterpiece ‘The Discovery of the Infant Erichthonius’ is part of the upcoming exhibit at the National Museum of Korea and will on display in Korea for the first time.

Museum-goers can also expect to see a myriad of works from 17th century Europe, such as paintings by Flemish Baroque artists Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens, and by Dutch Golden Age artist Jan Steen. A kunstkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, installation, with paintings, sculptures, handicrafts and furniture, is another highlight of the upcoming exhibit.
