Youths from all over the world next month will perform in a gugak (traditional music) concert in Seoul.
The Korea Heritage Agency on Dec. 10 will host “Sinawi Spectrum” at Korea Cultural House in the capital’s Gangnam-gu District.
The term sinawi refers to an improvisational form of traditional shamanic music. The event’s title reflects how music brings together youths from abroad who are united by their interest in traditional Korean music.
Musicians from countries with fans of traditional Korean music like France, Cameroon, Spain and Uzbekistan will perform on stage.
Pansori (solo lyrical opera) singer Laure Mafo from France will sing the narrative piece “Jebinojeonggi,” and dancer Alessandro Navarro Barbeito from Spain will perform a creative piece combining traditional Korean dance and flamenco.
Other performers such as gayageum (zither) player Choi Scarlett from the U.S. and Choi Eunji from Cameroon, who is majoring in the traditional zither ajaeng at Korea National University of Arts, will combine traditional music from Korea and other countries in their performances.
Choi will perform in both Korean and English, thus removing a language barrier for the audience.
Tickets are KRW 10,000 per seat. More information is available on the KHA’s official website (www.kh.or.kr).
