One of Incheon International Airport’s cultural experience centers recently got a makeover and reopened its doors on Jan. 23.
The center, located by the fourth floor west wing transfer lounge, now features two exhibit spaces themed on “meditation and contemplation” and “arts and exchange.”
The first space focuses on the various forms of meditation in which Joseon era seonbi Confucian scholars would engage to cultivate their minds. Here, visitors can take a look at a selection of artifacts made by artisans deemed as intangible cultural treasures, including ornate ink stones, brushes and other items from a traditional scholar’s study. A replica of the painting “Dokseoyeogado” (독서여가도), drawn by Joseon artist Gyeomje Jeongseon (겸재 정선, 謙齋 鄭敾) (1676-1759), is also on display. The painting shows a portrait of the artist himself resting in his home by the foothills of Seoul’s Inwangsan Mountain.
The “arts and exchange” exhibit showcases a variety of hats from Joseon times, such as the gat, a special horsetail hat worn by state officials. There is also a jeongjagwan (정자관), a hat with three peaks, and a tanggeon (탕건), a kind of headband worn under the hat.
An interactive exhibit featuring a painting by Joseon painter Jang Han Jong (장한종, 張漢宗) (1768-1815) introduces the artifacts that pop out from behind drawers with brief explanations.
Hologram videos that show porcelain vases made by artisans is another highlight.
