Museum Week launches at national museums across the country and will run until May 25, bringing a wide variety of educational and cultural programs for children.

At the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, visitors can take a look at two exhibitions, “On the Thunder-axe: Traditional Understanding of Prehistoric Stone Tools in Korea” and “Buddhist Hanging Scroll at Bukjangsa Temple.” The last will feature a 13-meter painting called a gwaebul that was traditionally used in ritual rain ceremonies. There are also cultural programs targeting international tourists, and a workshop for children where they can experience firsthand what it’s like to work at a museum. A retrospective of essayist and art historian Hyegok Choi Soon-woo (혜곡 최순우) (1916-1984) with an accompanying lecture is another highlight. Tickets for the children’s musical “Cat Zorba” will be sold at a 50 percent discount during Museum Week.

Meanwhile, the Buyeo National Museum in Chungcheongnam-do Province will hold a children’s art contest on May 16 where the young contestants will have to draw images of cultural heritage items and other museum artifacts. The Gwangju National Museum in Gwangju City, will host a “LOL Flea Market” on May 21, while the Gimhae National Museum in Gyeongsangnam-do Province will host its “Teen Culture Festival” on the same day. Museums across different regions will each be showcasing their own events, concerts, musicals and traditional performances throughout the festival.
