Singapore will get a taste of traditional Korean music used at royal rituals.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on April 4 announced its hosting of Jongmyo Jeryeak, or royal ancestral ritual music at Jongmyo Shrine, from April 4-5 at Esplanade Theater Hall in Singapore as its first event to mark the 50th anniversary of bilateral ties.
Featuring musical instruments, songs and dance, the performance was held during the memorial ritual Jongmyo Jerye at the shrine, which houses the tablets of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). UNESCO in 2001 designated both the ceremony and its music as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and put them on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.
This marks the debut of Jongmyo Jeryeak at the festival “A Tapestry of Sacred Music” in Singapore.
