Trot singer Song Ga-in will promote Hanbok culture to the world.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on March 21 appointed her its promotional ambassador for the traditional clothing this year.

On why it appointed her, the ministry said, “Song Ga-in, a former gugak (traditional music) artist, has led a trot renaissance since her debut in 2012 by appearing on many TV programs including ‘Miss Trot,'” adding, “She has also shown her love for Hanbok by highlighting its beauty on broadcast programs, performances and social media.”

Song will take part in many activities to encourage Koreans to wear Hanbok in daily life and raise interest in Korean culture throughout the globe.

In an interview after the ceremony, Song said, “I know that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is developing Hanbok-style uniforms for school or office to get more people closer to Hanbok and running diverse projects with fashion schools overseas and Korean Cultural Centers to allow people worldwide to enjoy Hanbok culture,” adding, “I will do my best to make Hanbok a type of fashion beloved around the world.”

“I hope that Song Ga-in can get people around the world to feel the beauty and charm of Hanbok through her activities as Hanbok ambassador,” Minister Hwang said. “The ministry will strive to develop Hanbok into clothing worn daily and at anytime as well as get our traditional clothing recognized as that loved by people worldwide.”

The ministry on March 25 will release a video clip of this interview on its official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/mcstkorea). An online comment event through April 27 also offers Hanbok-related prizes through a lottery.
