The curtain rises on Wagner’s ‘The Flying Dutchman’ at the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera House on Nov. 18, 20 and 22.

Accompanied by rich musical scores, “The Flying Dutchman” tells the story of a ghost captain who, having once invoked Satan, is cursed to roam the sea without rest. Wagner wrote his opera based on a novel by German writer Heinrich Heine, which tells the story of a sea captain cursed to sail forever until he is redeemed by the love of a faithful woman.

Conductor Ralf Weikert (right) and stage director Stephen Lawless are helping to bring ‘The Flying Dutchman’ to the stage.

It has been 40 years since the Korea National Opera last staged a production of “The Flying Dutchman.” Austrian conductor Ralf Weikert and British stage director Stephan Lawless are leading this modern interpretation of Wagner’s classic. It’s staged on a 20th century whaling ship travelling the southern seas. Weikert is the founder of a Wagner festival in Austria and is a veteran of Wagnerian productions. Lawless previously worked with the Korea National Opera in 2012 on the operetta “Die Fledermaus” and in 2014 on “Otello.” He returns for a third time in these upcoming performances.
