Korea ranked first in the 2016 Bloomberg Innovation Index, with a top score of 91.31 points.

This is the third year in a row that Korea topped the innovation index, having scored first place in 2014 and 2015.

Korea places first in the 2016 Bloomberg Innovation Index. It ranks economies using factors such as R&D spending and concentration of high tech in public companies.

The 2016 Bloomberg Innovation Index looked at 84 economies from around the world using seven criteria that included R&D intensity, manufacturing value-added and tertiary efficiency.

Germany, Sweden, Japan and Switzerland were in the top five list. In second place, Germany scored 85.54 points, followed by Sweden with 85.21 points, Japan with 85.07 points and Switzerland with 84.96 points.

The U.S. took No. 8 in the rankings, and China came in at No. 21.

Korea received top scores worldwide for manufacturing value-added and for tertiary efficiency, a measure that includes enrollment in higher education and the concentration of science and engineering graduates. The country placed second in R&D intensity and patent activity, and placed sixth in researcher concentration.
