The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Kyrgyzstan have agreed on closer cooperation in education, energy, digital and tourism.

The ministry on Aug. 12 said Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs Kim Heesang that day held talks with Kyrgyz Minister of Economy and Commerce Daniyar Amangeldiev at the sixth meeting of the Korea-Kyrgyz Commission on Economic Cooperation in Bishkek. They signed the agreed minutes of their discussion on cooperation in several sectors, it added.

The two sides cited the recent jump in bilateral trade volume and investment. To further raise both areas, they decided to work closely to diversify the items for trade and create a favorable environment for Korean companies to do business in Kyrgyzstan.

They also agreed to keep discussing specific cooperation, noting their potential in setting up supply chains for core minerals given Kyrgyzstan’s abundant natural resources and Korea’s cutting-edge technology.

Seoul and Bishkek will bolster cooperation in projects in climate change and energy security like reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through small hydropower projects and water management. Both ministers also agreed to quickly sign a cooperation treaty on climate change being negotiated.

The commission is said to have contributed to potentially raising mutually beneficial cooperation in diverse sectors by closely reviewing bilateral cooperation and holding in-depth talks on finding new cooperation projects.

To implement the Korea-Central Asia K-Silk Road Initiative, Seoul’s first strategy customized for Central Asia announced in June, both sides will seek promising cooperation projects in each field.
