First lady Kim Jung-sook paid a visit to the Korean-American Senior Center of Flushing in Queens on Sept. 20 and delivered some homemade kimchi, cubed kkakdugi radish kimchi and soy sauce marinated crabs to the residents there. Beef bone gomtang soup was also served.
“I made the kimchi at Cheong Wa Dae. When I heard that radishes in the U.S. have a slightly bitter taste, I decided to make some kkakdugi using our sweet Korean radishes,” said Kim. “Also, I put a lot of shrimp into the marinade for the crabs, hoping there would be plenty to go around,” she added.
“Whenever I travel, I always think about Koreans living abroad, and how, even after all those years living in another country, their hearts are filled with hope for the motherland. This is why I headed to the senior center first in Washington, D.C., and why I came straight to Flushing, here in New York,” said Kim.
“I’m grateful for your continued support for our country through thick and thin. As Korean-Americans grow in influence across U.S. society, our government will offer support to meet the expectations of our overseas communities. I wish you all the best of health, and hope that you will continue to watch as our country and our overseas Korean communities develop and flourish,” she said.
