Korea and China held a meeting of their foreign ministers on the sidelines of the foreign ministers’ summit of the Group of 20 economies.
Foreign Minister Park Jin and Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on July 7 held talks for 50 minutes on the Indonesian island of Bali on a wide range of topics of common interest such as the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations and North Korea’s nuclear program.
The in-person meeting was the first of its kind in eight months since October last year and the first under the Yoon administration in Seoul.
Minister Park said, “As the Korean government has joined the international community’s solidarity for freedom and peace under the vision of a global pivot country, we expect Korea-China relations to also develop based on these universal values and norms,” adding, “Both countries should work closely together to respond to joint global tasks so that bilateral cooperation can contribute to regional and global peace and prosperity.”
“To develop a healthier and more mature bilateral relationship, we will boost practical cooperation in areas like economy, culture and the environment (improvement of fine dust control) while promoting cultural content exchange and resuming and expanding flights to prepare for the post-COVID-19 era and restoring and expanding human exchanges.”
Minister Wang said, “On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, we hope to expand cooperation in a range of fields such as culture, human exchange and economy with Korea, an important and inseparable neighbor,” adding, “Let’s strengthen bilateral communication and cooperation on the regional and global stages.”
