Korea and China have launched a joint laboratory where agricultural government bodies from both countries will conduct agricultural research and development.

The Rural Development Administration (RDA) and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) have opened the Korea-China Joint Laboratory, in Beijing on Dec. 11. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding for the establishment and management of the facilities.

Both Seoul and Beijing will dispatch agriculture experts to the lab to deal with international issues of mutual interest, such as climate change and food security. Lab management will be decided upon annually during the Agriculture Technical Cooperation Council between the RDA and the CAAS. The two countries will take turns to host the council in alternating years.

The first task to be carried out at the new facilities is to conduct research into how to enhance disaster tolerance among farm produce so that it can withstand climate change. One researcher from the RDA has already begun examining this issue.

“Hopefully, the launch of this joint lab will help further consolidate mutual cooperation on agricultural techniques between the two government bodies, and furthermore will contribute to the development of advanced agricultural skills in both countries, too,” said Lee Yangho, administrator of the RDA.
