Traffic management experts from Korea and Colombia attend a meeting in Seoul on May 31 to discuss current capabilities of the Korean Intelligent Transport System (ITS), as well as strategies implemented for optimum traffic control.
Korea is sharing its traffic management skills and expertise with Colombia, a country currently dealing with serious traffic congestion due to urbanization and rapid economic growth.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, together with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), invited 15 Colombian government officials to Korea on May 29 for a three-week training session, lasting until June 18. During this time, Korean officials will share the best practices of Korea’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) with the Colombian delegation through a series of talks and site visits.
The Colombian officials, from the Ministry of Transport and from city governments in Bogota, Medellin and Barranquilla, will be visiting ITS facilities like the Seoul Transport Operation & Information Service and the National Transport Information Center. There, the team will share opinions on the best ways to implement the Korean system into local Colombian infrastructure.

Just last year, public buses in Bogota adopted a traffic management and fee collection system developed by LG CNS. Since then, other Colombian cities, including Medellin and Barranquilla, have been eager to incorporate Korea’s ITS into their management structures as well.
An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “The training session will provide an opportunity to increase international cooperation between governments and private organizations. We hope to set up a systematic, cooperative network with the Colombian delegation and continue to explore the possibility of follow-up ventures.”
