The foreign ministers of Korea and Cuba met for the first time on June 5 in Havana.
The talks came as Minister of Foreign Affairs Yun Byung-se paid a two-day visit to Havana on June 4 and 5 to attend a summit of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). Yun is now the first Korean foreign minister to visit to the island nation.
The Korean minister met with his Cuban counterpart, Minister Bruno Rodriguez, and the two had a broad exchange of views for 75 minutes, touching on many topics.
During the meeting, the Cuban minister welcomed Yun’s first visit to his nation, while Yun celebrated Cuba’s successful hosting of the ACS summit.
Yun expressed his desire to see a stronger partnership between Korea and the ACS, as he was attending the summit in person this time. He also mentioned that the Korean government was seeking ways to contribute to coping with climate change in the Caribbean, a campaign being led by the Cuban government.
In response, the Cuban minister expressed high hopes for strengthened cooperation with Seoul in dealing with climate change and in achieving sustainable development, two core agenda items at the ACS meeting. He also appreciated the Korean government’s willingness to engage in such critical matters.
Finally, the talks allowed the two ministers to exchange their views on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest, as well. Yun concluded the talks by expressing his gratitude for the hospitality shown by the Cuban government toward his delegation.
