The governments of Korea and Japan recently held in-depth discussions on how to better protect copyright and increase cooperation in this area.

On Dec. 12, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs co-hosted the 2016 Korea-Japan Copyright Forum in Seoul, under the theme of, “Japan’s system for the management of copyright and strategies for the protection of copyrights abroad.”

Representatives from the Korean and Japanese governments discuss how to better protect copyright during the 2016 Korea-Japan Copyright Forum in Seoul on Dec. 12.

The forum was divided into three sections. Experts from both countries participated in a series of presentations and discussions on “The current system of using and managing original works,” “Expanding the scope of performing rights in Japan,” and lastly, “Strategies for the protection of TV broadcasts on the global scene.”

Officials from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs talked about efforts made by the agency to expand rights for performers who play or sing any form of work, as well as its system and policies pertaining to the intensive management of copyright. The Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC), gave a presentation on the transformed method of calculating the copyright management ratio and the approval process of copyright among broadcasters. The Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), meanwhile, shared its strategies for the protection of Japanese TV shows.

The participating experts continued to share their own experiences with copyright violation which are extremely common in their respective countries and came up with solutions to promote legal distribution. The participants not only shared their thoughts on how to deal with the changing landscape of copyright, but also exchanged the latest information and relevant policies.

Marking its eighth run this year, the Korea-Japan Copyright Forum has been held annually since 2009. The Korean culture ministry and Japanese cultural agency have continued bilateral cooperation in this field, especially since the two governments signed a memorandum of understanding MOU) for cooperation on copyright and neighboring rights of copyright in September 2011.
