Korea and Mauritius have agreed to work on road decongestion and development in Mauritius. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on June 13 that the two governments have signed a memorandum of agreement concerning their bilateral partnership on road decongestion in Mauritius.

The road decongestion project includes the development of new beltway roads, a main road connection and intersection improvements around the Indian Ocean nation’s capital, Port Louis, that will cost around KRW 170 billion. The Korea Expressway Corporation will be in charge of managing the entire project and Daewoo Engineering & Construction will take on the planning and construction.

While reaching an agreement on this road construction project, the two governments also discussed potential future partnerships, as well as projects such as light rail train developments, the purchase of vessels and hotel construction. Concerning the roads project, contracts and paper work will be completed during the third quarter of this year and construction will begin at the end of the year.

Mauritius, an island nation in East Africa known for its beautiful nature, has been facing transportation and infrastructure challenges due to rapid urbanization and the nation’s relatively small amount of land. Having participated in the 25th World Road Congress last November in Seoul, the Mauritian government decided to tackle its road challenges through a partnership with Korea.
