Archive specialists from Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Mongolia are greeted by a Korean official at the International Council on Archives Congress 2016, held at the COEX convention center on Sept. 5.
Korea is sharing its archiving expertise with its Asian neighbors.
Thirty-four archive specialists from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Mongolia, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia and Laos arrived in Korea on Sept. 4 to attend the International Council on Archives (ICA) Congress 2016, held in Seoul this year. While here, the specialists will also be partaking in a training program organized by the National Archives of Korea on the sidelines of the main event.
At the ICA Congress this year, the specialists will get a chance to learn about Korea’s archiving traditions and digital management systems. Recent trends in digital archiving and other state-of-the-art technologies will also be introduced. A collection of archival treasures, including the Haerye edition of the Hunminjeongeum (훈민정음 해례본), a book explaining the letters and sounds of Hangeul, the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (조선왕조실록), theJikji (직지심체요절), a book of Buddhist teachings printed with movable metal type, the Journal of the Royal Secretariat (승정원일기), the Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty (조선왕조 의궤) and the war diary of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (난중일기) will all be on display.

The 34 archivists will present case studies on archival management systems and share their country-specific experiences with each other through Sept. 10. Their discussions will focus on newly developed archival services, and ways to use digital content to enhance the current system.
On the final few days, the group will come up with action plans for their countries. The session will wrap up with visits to the exhibition halls and management offices of the National Archives of Korea, and to the National Museum of Korea and the National Hangeul Museum.
