Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and U.S. President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation where they shared their views on the latest Washington-Beijing summit, North Korean nuclear weapons and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.
Acting President Hwang told President Trump that, “The latest U.S.-China summit offered a chance to reaffirm the firm and strong Seoul-Washington alliance.”
“We will need to work together to further strengthen the unwavering readiness backed by the bilateral alliance and the close bilateral cooperation,” he said.
U.S. President Trump said that the U.S.-China summit was successful and that the two leaders had in-depth discussions on trade, defense and North Korea.
President Trump said that he emphasized the importance of the Korea-U.S. alliance to both the U.S. and to himself, personally, during the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
President Trump also told Hwang that he always supported South Korea’s policy toward the North, and that the two nations would work together in order to keep a close eye on Pyongyang.
