A new dorm facility for international Korean students will open its doors in Paris in 2018.

President Park Geun-hye, during her state visit to France, attended a groundbreaking ceremony on June 2 for the “Maison de la Coree,” or the Korea House, at the International University Campus in Paris.

“I am pleased to lay down the foundation stone for the Korea House in the year that marks 130 years of diplomatic relations between our two nations,” said the president, adding that, “This new facility will become a space where young people from Korea and the rest of the world can share meaningful experiences and form lasting relationships.”

Korea House will be able to house 260 international students in a building equipped with a concert hall, a cafeteria, seminar rooms, exhibition spaces, offices, common rooms and communal kitchens. The building will start taking in students in the first semester of 2018. Of the total number of students, 70 percent of the space will be allotted to Korean international students, while the rest will be given to students of other nationalities.

The International University Campus in Paris was founded by the French Ministry of Education in 1920 in the aftermath of World War I. Today, it is a multicultural dormitory compound with some 25 dorms managed by the U.S., Germany, India, Cambodia and many other countries. Korea will join the campus as the 26th member.

Currently there are around 6,500 Korean international students studying in France.
