The new Presidential Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation held a signboard-hanging ceremony on Dec. 7, officially marking its launch.

The committee will review and adjust major policies regarding economic cooperation and foster stronger ties among Eurasian nations.

It plans to devise a roadmap for northern economic cooperation, and will provide strategies and methodologies for the new northern policies to the Moon Jae-in administration. It will also prepare detailed plans for cooperation with Russia to develop its Far East in nine fields: gas, electricity, railroads, ports, a North Pole sea route, agriculture, fisheries, ship building and job creation.

“I hope that this committee can contribute to creating economic growth engine in the future and bring peace to the Korean Peninsula by strengthening cooperation with Eurasian nations,” said Chairman Song Young-gil of the committee.

The signboard-hanging ceremony was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Kim Dong-yeon, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha and Minister of Unification Cho Myoung-Gyon.
