President Moon Jae-in, currently on an official state visit to China, attended the Korea-China Business Forum on Dec. 13, where he stressed that, “Korea and China are ‘a community of common destiny’ that prospers together.”
“As long as the two countries join forces with the same mind, as it says in the Chinese idiom ‘Crossing a river in the same boat’ (同舟共濟), we will thrive and grow together,” President Moon said.
At the forum, with more than 500 business leaders from Seoul and Beijing in attendance, the president called Chinese President Xi Jinping’s new policy — “Building a community of common destiny for mankind” — to be “the start of peace and co-prosperity across Northeast Asia.”
“As responsible entities in Northeast Asia, Korea and China will hopefully work together to respond to new changes and challenges in the future,” President Moon said.
Emphasizing the need to renew the paradigm of bilateral economic cooperation, President Moon put out three principles: enhance the institutional framework for economic cooperation; pursue future-oriented cooperation grounded on economic strategies pursued by the two administrations; and, lastly, seek people-oriented cooperation that focuses on promoting an amicable sentiment between the two peoples.

The president outlined eight specific measures needed to implement these three principles. They included: putting in place an institutional framework for stable economic cooperation; improving the quality of bilateral trade by diversifying the areas of trade and digital trade; and enhancing cooperation across future new industries in response to the forth industrial revolution, future new industries, ventures, energy and the environment, as well as on job creation.
Korea and China are also undertaking joint efforts to jointly expand business in the infrastructure industry in third countries, and revitalizing human-to-human exchanges centered on people.
