President Moon Jae-in held a meeting with Director-General Guy Ryder of the International Labour Organization (ILO) at Cheong Wa Dae on Sept. 4. In the meeting, he explained his new administration’s labor policies, such as increasing the minimum wage and the number of permanent workers.
The director-general agreed that the process of revising domestic labor laws to meet international standards involves both concessions and compromises, given the different points of view involved. He encouraged the efforts of the Moon administration to try to create a society of labor rights that are upheld to the highest degree.
Referring to Professor Chung Chin-Sung of the Seoul National University Department of Sociology, who was elected as a member of the ILO’s Global Commission on the Future of Work, the president asked that the director-general give attention to other qualified Korean academics who are ready to join the ILO network.
That same day, the president met with Director Nikolai Patrushev of the Russian Federal Security Service. They discussed Korea-Russia defense cooperation to combat North Korea’s nuclear weapons provocations, and bilateral cooperation in the security field.
