German President Joachim Gauck attended the seventh Joint Korean-German Conference on Science and Innovation on Oct. 13 in Seoul, part of the official itinerary for his state visit to Korea. At the conference, he said that, “Creating an innovative society is challenging. Citizens are often afraid of innovation. However, when civil society and individual citizens, as well as academics, businesses and politicians, engage in discussions and debates on innovation, a society can overcome the challenges of innovation.”
Kim Hwang-sik, chairman of the Germany-Korea alumni network (ADeKo, Alumninetzwerk Deutschland-Korea) and former prime minister of Korea, also spoke at the conference and reminded attendees that this is the 70th anniversary of Korean independence and the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. He hoped that the conference would create momentum for economic growth and cooperation between Korea and Germany.
The conference covered technological development and innovation that is connected with ongoing megatrends, such as “Industry 4.0” and big data. In attendance were various businesspeople and academics from both countries, as well as medicine Nobel laureate Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard.
