A book that provides accurate scientific and Korean names for foreign and indigenous plants cultivated in Korea has been published for use by the public.

On Dec. 26, the Korea National Arboretum released the “Standard Checklist of Cultivated Plants in Korea,” a plant guidebook that includes the names of some 9,969 different species of plants that are cultivated and sold on the local market.

The Korea National Arboretum publishes the ‘Standard Checklist of Cultivated Plants in Korea’ on Dec. 26, a guidebook of scientific and Korean names for some 9,969 plants species.

The checklist first explains the standard practice for naming plant species and then provides a comprehensive list of the names of plant species. The scientific names are based on the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), while the Korean names take cues from the plant’s most commonly used name by the general public.

The first edition of the guidebook, published in 2010, was modified for the second edition so that each plant is listed by its common name followed by its classification by species and variety. The newest edition also adds prefixes to the names of plants that have descriptive scientific names, including adjectives such as white, red, golden and patterned to certain varieties of plants.

“A wide variety of foreign and indigenous plant species are cultivated in Korea for landscaping and ornamental purposes, and without a standard list of Korean names for all the plants, names will often get mixed up,” said Director of the Korea National Arboretum Lee Yumi. “With the release of the latest edition of the ‘Standard Checklist of Cultivated Plants in Korea’ it will be easier to refer to specific varieties of plants. We have plans to release another guidebook with photos, so that we can make it even easier to identify the plants in the catalog,” she added.

The “Standard Checklist of Cultivated Plants in Korea” can be downloaded as a PDF file at the Korea National Arboretum website (www.kna.go.kr), under the research publications sub-category.
