A new Korean War memorial was unveiled on Aug. 1 at the Presidio in San Francisco, California.
The memorial displays major battles of the war and has a map of the Korean Peninsula. On the opposite side there’s a panel with an explanation of the outbreak of the war, how the war proceeded and the significance of the war memorial.
The Presidio of San Francisco, a park, is home to the peaceful remains of 2,273 war veterans, and it served as training grounds for the U.S. Army after 1846. Many of the U.S. troops sent to Korea were also trained here.

To inaugurate the war memorial, there was a ceremony on Aug. 1. Along with surviving war veterans, Kathleen Stephens, former U.S. ambassador to Korea, Korean War Memorial Foundation President Quentin Kopp, Korea’s Vice Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Choi Wan-geun and Ahn Ho-young, Korean ambassador to the U.S., attended the ceremony.

That same day, Korea’s Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs awarded medals to honor Korean War veterans residing in the San Francisco area. The ministry has been honoring Korean War veterans residing overseas since last January when it first awarded honorary medals to Korean War veterans in Chicago.
