Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon had a get-together with some of his Facebook friends and acquaintances to enjoy the movie ”1987: When the Day Comes” at a movie theater in Jongno-gu District, Seoul, on Jan. 14.
This is now the second movie meet-up he has announced on the social media platform. The first was in August 2017 when they watched the film “A Taxi Driver” (택시운전사).
The prime minister published a post on Jan. 9 suggesting to anyone who follows him on Facebook that they to go watch the film together.
His invitation got many replies, and on Jan. 10 he said online, “Just like the last meeting, many of you wanted to come and watch the movie ‘1987: When the Day Comes’ together. It’s a shame that I can’t go to the theater with all of you.”
On Jan. 15, he posted four photos of him meeting around 20 of his Facebook friends and acquaintances. The photos show them at the theater and then enjoying a beer together afterward. “The movie shows us the fact that the big sacrifices and courageous choices of countless ordinary people built the fundamentals of our lives,” said the prime minister online.
He also introduced his relationship to the on-screen character Yoon Sang-sam, who was a real person in history. “In 1987, I used to be a reporter in charge of covering the opposition party. I covered the rally at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall in June 1987. When the reporter Yoon Sang-sam from the Dong-a Ilbo passed away in 1999, I was the chief commissioner at his funeral.”
The movie “1987: When the Day Comes” tells the story about the death of university student Park Jong-chul who died fighting for democracy. His death kindled the rage that ignited the June Democracy Movement in June 1987.
