Harry Harris officially became the new U.S. ambassador to Korea on July 7.
A retired four-star admiral and the first Asian-American to hold that rank, Harris held a press conference upon his arrival at Incheon International Airport. He said, “Over the past 65 years, the Korea-U.S. alliance has served as a pillar of strength and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. America couldn’t ask for a better friend, partner and ally than Korea.”
“We hope our alliance will work to make the people in both countries closer and closer,” he said.
Harris is to fill the ambassadorial post that has been vacant since his predecessor, Mark Lippert, stepped down upon the inauguration of Donald Trump in January 2017.
