A domestic consortium has exported technology for nuclear reactors used for research to the U.S., where such know-how originated.

The Ministry of Science and ICT on April 17 said the consortium concluded a deal to export such technology to the U.S.

The contract is for the initial design of the Next Generation Missouri University Research Reactor (NextGen MURR) ordered by the University of Missouri in a competitive global bidding.

This is considered Korea’s first step in exporting designs of nuclear plants for research to the U.S., a global power in the field, affirming world-class Korean know-how in such technology.

“The government will strengthen such exports via research,” Minister of Science and ICT Yoo Sang-Im said. “We will lead global nuclear technology and develop this into a future growth engine.”

The export comes 66 years after Korea in 1959 began developing nuclear power technology with help from the U.S.
