The Seoul Metropolitan Government from March 24 to April 21 will accept nominations for honorary citizenship this year among expats who have made contributions to the capital.
Criteria for a nominee this year are residency in Seoul for at least three straight years or a combined five and contributing to greatly advancing the city’s status in and out of the country, improving the lives or cultural activities of residents, boosting the capital’s economic development, and introducing advanced know-how in science and technology.
Recommendations must come from the heads of public organizations like national institutions, local governments, companies or groups and those of civic groups or petitions with signatures from at least 30 residents.
The nomination form is available on the notice and announcement section of the city’s website (www.seoul.go.kr). The deadline is April 21.
Shortlisted candidates will undergo a public screening by a committee of experts in the city’s administration and international exchange, and the winners will receive honorary citizenship with approval from the Seoul Metropolitan Council. The awards ceremony will be held in November or December.
Those receiving honorary citizenship will get the opportunity to take part in urban administration through things like invitations to official city events and roles on municipal committees, as well as serve as global ambassadors for the capital.
