The Daegu Chimac Festival this week will return for the first time in three years in the nation’s fourth-largest city of Daegu.
The term “chimaek” is a neologism combining the words “chicken” and maekju (beer), thus the term basically means “chicken and beer.”
The Daegu municipal government on July 4 announced that the festival will run from July 6-10 at Duryu Park and Duryu Avenue of Youth in the city’s Dalseo-gu District and part of Pyeonghwa Market in Dong-gu District, an area renowned for chicken gizzard restaurants.
The festival was canceled in 2020 and last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus it will return for the first time in three years. This year’s edition will be the largest in the event’s history to mark a return to daily life, overcoming of COVID-19 and the festival’s 10th anniversary.
About 100 chicken and beer businesses will install approximately 200 chimaek booths.
The opening ceremony on July 6 will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of Duryu Baseball Stadium, featuring performances by K-pop stars and drone shows.
Disposable cups were a problem at the end of previous festivals, so this year’s event will use an eco-friendly cup made of starch. Participants will also receive discount coupons for use at the city’s famous tourist attractions and food alleys.
Daegu is considered the nation’s chicken mecca, as famous franchises like Hosigi Dumari Chicken, Mexican Chicken and Cheogajip Chicken were launched or saw significant growth there.
