Korea and China have further strengthened cooperation on health and medical services.

The Ministry of Health & Welfare signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the health and medical sector with the Chinese Health and Family Planning Commission of Hunan Province on Sept. 21.

Under the agreement, the two nations will join forces to improve the quality of medical technology and services, as well as simplify the process of obtaining a license for medical services issued among Korean health care providers. This will help Korean medical institutions operate in the province and allow for the use of Korean medicine and medical equipment more easily and quickly.

Prior to the signing, a conference on China’s new Medical City projects brought together representatives from China’s four designated “medical cities” — one each in Hunan, Shandong, Liaoning and Jiangsu provinces — medical organizations from Korea and companies involved in the medicine and medical appliance industries.

During the conference, participants shared their thoughts about the current state of each country’s healthcare industry and its characteristics, and discussed possible strategies to allow related institutions and companies to expand operations in each country.

Through this exchange of information, the Korean participants learned that the licensing procedure for Korean medical professionals who want to practice in Hunan Province has been simplified. They also learned that there is a variety of incentives on offer in the four medical cities, including being entitled to lower real estate prices.
