We are at Gwanghwamun Square in the heart of Seoul on March 1, where a ceremony is taking place to mark the centennial for the March First Independence Movement.

One hundred years ago today, Korea’s first uprising against Japanese colonial rule began on March 1, 1919. These street demonstrations began in Seoul and spread throughout the country, providing a catalyst for the Korean Independence Movement.

Following the March 1 demonstrations, the Korean Provisional Government was established in Shanghai that same year.

This is why 2019 is such a meaningful year for Korea.

This year is a celebration of 100 years since our fight for autonomy and freedom, and 100 years since the Korean Declaration of Independence.
